FAQ

Is it safe to burn my candle all the way to the bottom?

We recommend you discontinue burning your candle once there is approximately ½” of wax left at the bottom of the jar. This will help prevent possible damage done by heat to countertops and other surfaces. It will also help to prevent the glass container from cracking or breaking. Although we only use high quality glassware, it still gets hot.

Here are a few other safety guidelines:

  • Always keep a burning candle within sight. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish all candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Keep candles away from anything flammable.
  • Make sure candles are out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always trim your wick to ¼” prior to burning your candle.
  • Using a candle snuffer or any other nonflammable object is one of the safest ways to extinguish your candle.

How long will my candle burn?

We tested every candle in our home and have come up with the following:

20 oz. 180-200 hrs
16 oz. 140-160 hrs
14 oz. 120-140 hrs
12 oz. 100-120 hrs
8 oz. 60-80 hrs
4 oz. 25-35 hrs
2 oz. 10-15 hrs

There are many variables that affect the burning time of your candle. Here are some ways to ensure you are getting the maximum burn time out of your Soy and the City candle:

  • Keep candles away from any draft.
  • Trim your wick ¼” prior to burning.
  • Do not burn your candle more than 2-3 hours at a time or until the surface has liquefied before extinguishing your candle. Some candles will need to burn longer than others, approximately 1 hour for each inch in diameter. For example, a candle that is 3” in diameter should burn for 3 hours to establish its memory. This will also help to prevent “Tunneling” as described in “Why Soy”.

Why am I seeing soot on my jar?

A small amount of soot is a normal by-product of burning. Soy candles burn much cleaner than paraffin candles, so you will see a significant reduction of soot. Most importantly, the soot that is emitted does not contain any toxins. You can reduce the soot that is produced by always trimming your wick to ¼” prior to burning, clearing way any debris that may have fallen into the wax, and keeping your candle out of any draft. When color is added to any candle, you may notice more soot than the natural soy candles containing no color. Even with color added, the amount of soot is still significantly less.

How soon will I receive my order?

Because we custom make your candles instead of mass producing, please allow 2 weeks for delivery. We want your candle to cure for one week which allows the fragrance to permeate throughout, thereby providing you with the strongest candle possible. We typically ship UPS. We have provided a chart below so you can estimate the cost of your shipment. Because of their weight, shipping candles is expensive, so we devised a plan to save you more. Simply put, the more you order, the more you save!
